This problem is only new Jeff. I didn't have any of these dramas when I got it done. Cos of work, I've not driven the car much lately. But it first went to s**t while I was cruising down the freeway a few months back, but only 300 - 400km ago.

I've got it booked in to Ford for a diagnostic check on Wednesday. Can anyone tell me how long this should take? The bird on the phone reckons 2 - 3 hours, it al depends on how long the computer takes. I'm sure it only takes a few minutes... But I'd better check before I start accusing them of trying to stooge me!

Ford wouldnt know what they would be looking at. They'd scan for codes but probably when they see what you are running, it'll more than likely become a stalemate.

If the Tune is the problem, see a tuner about it.

Yeah, but if it was just the tune then it wouldn't be intermittent. The way I see it, it is something that effects the tune, such as a sensor or something. I'm not interested in getting ford to fix it for me, I just want the codes and I'll replace what I need to if anything. Otherwise, I'll have to come up with another plan. It could be something like a loose wire in a plug somewhere for all I know. I hope not though.

Sounds like the fuel side as in accelerator pump needs increasing in ECU settings.. If it can be done..

If I'm unable to work out what the reason is for it switching between good and bad every now and then, I will attempt to fix it through the tune. I'm worried that if I adjust the tune for the lean condition now, then it decides to go back to the way it was, before this problem when it was already running rich, it will be even richer still.

Swine - No, I haven't yet ruled the tfi out. I need to find one to change out and see. I'll have a dig through all my old stuff and see if my old one is in there.

10 points goes to s-tranzor!

I pulled the hegos today and the passenger side one was smashed. Whatever is inside it was rattling around. Replaced it and now she's back to her old self. I learnt a couple of lessons going through all this.

1. Don't disregard something just because you've replaced it recently.

2. If you have a series 1 EL xr8, your ect & iat sensors are different to those out of a series 2 EL xr8, but the same as the EF.

^^^ Sensores are different due to manifolds. S1 has HO, S2 has Explorer. Well done on the fix

reason I ask is mine used to do same thing. After I replaced O2 sensors and took it back to BPT for a dynotune (last tuesday) it was fine. Apparently it was running too lean due to bad sensors. He was able to richen the AFR which gave more torque and better idle when hot... runs cooler now too.

Yes he was right :D
How the hell did you manage to break an o2 sensor?

Ifyou cycle the key( turn it off then start it again) and it drives sweet for say 30 seconds then it maybe an issue with closed/open loop mode, suggesting an electronic issue, like you suspect. The o2 sensors are an input to the ECU, allowing it to adjust the AFR(air fuel ratio) accordingly. A backfire indicates a lean mixture and can be caused by a vacuum leak,(EGR diaphragm) or fuel pressure(you checked it). If the ignition system is sweet Id be looking at the EGR, but the IAT (intake air temp) sensors fail also. (bloody hell is there any more) Never changed an ECT.

I've got no idea Shannon, I thought maybe a rock could have flicked up, but that part is inside the exhaust, so who knows. Maybe half a valve hit it or something?! Haha
