If you have a jaycar or electronics shop around, the resistors will set you back less than a dollar.

Then you need to get to the ECU loom and solder the resistors across specific wires.

A manual tune J3 chip is $120 from reading this:
http://www.tiperformance.com.au/buy.html You just slot it into the bottom of your ECU and bobs your uncle. :-)

The colours are different for EL as there is no separate gearbox loom.
Here's some notes I made. This should be enough to get you through it.

On the little square plug, join wires Red/Dark Blue & Black to bypass the neutral inhibitor. For reverse you need to connect the other two wires to the reverse switch on the gearbox. (Red/Black & White/Red)

On the round plug at the gearbox, the 1.2k resistor goes between the Yellow and Black/White wires for gear select, and the 6.8k resistor goes between Pink/Green and Black/White for trans temperature.

Thanks heaps. so that is definately the wiring for an el?
the first part you mentioned about the nuetral and reverve is that just so it doesnt rev and stuff between gear changes? Just I know when my ex first had it converted, even though it is unfinished the mechanic he seen did the wiring part so you can start the car and drive it, but the resisters were never done.

Also do I have to have a j chip as well as the resisters or are the resisters enough on their own?

this is the thing i was telling you that needs to be unplugged for the time being, it contols the idle on the car, the only problem is you need to adjust the base idle screw to idle the car and it will be a bit harder to start when cold you will need to put the foot on the throttle a little, get your mechanic to do this for you whjen yo get your brakes done

I actually installed a switch so I could turn the ICS (Idle Control Solenoid) on and off at will.

I turn it on for cold starts and then once the car is at normal temp, switch it off again.

I also have it setup so the ICS turns on with the A/C pump so the engine won't stall at idle with the A/C on.

Cheers
BenJ

As so many people have said before, thanks to Voxace for his excellent E series manual conversion guide. It was a great help in getting rid of the four speed sludgebox from my old wagon.

For anybody who is interested in converting an EA to manual, here is a pic of the round gearbox loom plug (the one near the brake master cylinder). The EA wire colours are different from the EF and EL (don't know about EB or ED).

I hope this is helpful to somebody.
