when my au xl is coming down through the revs with no clutch or accelerator it makes a decent whining sound. anyone know what it could be?

Where is the noise? engine, gearbox, diff? there are quite a number of thing that can make a whining sound.

sounds like its coming from either engine of gearbox.

228,000. ive only had it for about 5000 and ive treated her pretty well. burnout here and there

My AU had some insane diff whine, that was caused by a stuffed pinion bearing. It could be anything driveline at this stage.

its like its cringing as the revs drop back down haha. just whenever the revs are dropping with clutch out and in gear it does it. with clutch in or in neutral its fine.

Sounds like the gearbox whine every car ive ever driven has had. Does it sound like its breaking anything?

ohk, so its not to bad of a thing? or have you replaced gearbox? nah not really. its just kinda loud and sounds bad aha

My AU did the EXACT same thing, it had 6mm of play in the pinion. Sounds like it's the diff from what you have described.
