Hey all just had a quick question about the 4sp autos . . . is it possible to use an i6 4sp and change the bellhousing and shaft to v8 ones and use it in a stock standard ef 5ltr? i only ask beacause i need to replace to one in my ef fairmont but the i6 ones are alot more common and much cheaper and for the simple fact of the power differance between the 2 motors are very minamal

Cheers
Grant :P

I'm not positive but I think the V8 boxes are a bit longer or something.

Oh ok thanks mate - i will probably still look into it a bit more coz if it can be done without any strength issues and without any customisation i will do it coz it will be a hell of a lot cheaper for me . . . cheers for the reply tho mate :P

The output shaft and extension housings are different lengths between the V8 and 6cyl boxes. I believe the converter throat may be different too, not 100% on this one yet, will be pulling apart a V8 box soon, so we'll see.

I have however found a v8 gearbox in shepparton (long way from me tho) with 177,000kms approx tested and with a 30day warranty for $400. . . which in my oppinion isnt to bad of a price . . .

$400 w/30day warranty... sounds like the seller has a no idea if it works or not really, doesn't seem that cheap IMHO.

What's wrong with your current transmission?

I know of wreckers that sell 6 cyl 4spd auto's for $280 with anywhere between 30 days & 3mths warranty. So 400 sounds reasonable for a V8 box.

Cheers

You can pick up second hand 6cyl boxes for $100 on ebay, as long as you're prepared to wait maybe a week or two. The boxes from wreckers typically aren't tested either, so if you get one that has an issue, having a warranty is great, but swapping them out isn't exactly the smallest job.

I don't think a V8 box is worth that much more than a 6cyl box. $400 from a wreckers, maybe in a pinch, from anyone else I wouldn't touch it.

I've seen the V8 BTRs go for $100 or less on ebay too, worth keeping an eye out for.

I thought that wasnt too bad . . . the current box has no reverse and when i was driving it home after i bought it, it died. im pretty sure it was the flywheel or the flexplate what ever you call it that f**k up and made the motor die . . . long story but if your interested:

Ebay is where i found this bloke - he is wrecker in shepparton and had an au xr6 transmission for auction so i decided to email him and ask if he had any v8 btrs and yeah . . . $400 with 30day warranty 177xxxkms and he said its been tested and in excelent condition - now whether or not he is being 100% honest is another thing but any transmission is better than the one that i have at the moment - since the car wont even start . . . cheers everyone for the replies :P
