hey all, long time reader, first time poster
i have a nf fairland I6 auto, when i drive around town, its is great but whenever i heavy foot it around corners or maybe for a drag  the rpm shoots up and trans "appears" to go to neautral.....it of corse is still in drive but it wont go anywhere. i first suspected it was low oil but i topped it up and it still does it.

i checked fordmods and found similar problems but with my issue, the car dosnt just go to 1st or 2nd, it will actually stop driving and if it dosn't kick back into gear i need to turn engine off and count to 30 then start and that gets me home.

happened to me in middle of town 2 nights ago and my mate had to jump out and push so we could change lane to turn engine off

thx for reading and any help will be GREATLY appreciated :D

First thing I would check would be fluid level, which you have done. When was the last time it was serviced? A fluid and filter change might help it. If that doesn't help, it could be an electrical issue. Usually the inhibitor switch which tells the ECU what position the shifter is in. They can become faulty and tell lies. The speedo transducer can also reek havoc with the shifting, but more likely the inhibitor switch.

Cheers,

Evan.

thx for quick reply, i have tried driving with t-bar in 1st and 2nd position just incase the inhibitor swich and t-bar were not adjusted properly(bar that joins t-bar to g-box between car and g-box), would that also tell me if it was inhibitor switch >? by the way, driving with t-bar in diff persitions didnt help. wouldnt even reverse

Yep, sounds like inhibitor switch.

BUUUUT

Before we get too carried away, what is the fluid like? Red, brown, burnt smelling?

See if you can visit your local mechanic, or better yet, transmission specialist, and see if they can pull any transmission error codes out of it.

Trust me, I've been down this road, and you probably don't want to go to all the trouble of ripping out the BTR and chucking a 5-speed in the hole like I did lol.

Yep I'm gonna pile on here and say Inhibitor Switch. Was one of the first things i had to replace on my EL that was producing the same problem. Only difference is i could drop the gear back to second manually and usually it would pop into gear. But i didn't play around with a broken inhibitor switch too long.. Drove me nuts. And started doing weird things like engine braking at high speed.

You mentioned you did try putting it in low gear but then it didn't help? I didn't quite understand what you meant. So for me.. I was told by one of the trans guys i spoke with.. If you can put it in low gear (eg: just stick it in first and don't move it.. And you can feel it changing gears regardless.. ) That's suppose to be good evidence of a stuffed switch. Mostly the evidence for me was the car completely jumping out of gear and just free revving its guts out till it found gear again.. Still got problems with my box but nothing as major as that anymore which is nice.

Yes,,when I put t-bar in lower position, it still wouldnt change or engage in any gears, it was just free revving ...... changed inhibitor switch with still no change.
went to a few people and told them of my problem and I got the reply "bands".......because they arn't externally adjustable, I put new g-box in yesturday n all problems will be solved :)......
