you need to replace the nylon bushes on the shifter shaft where it pivots

just ask for a pair of bushes for your auto selector shaft pivot..... most ford spare parts guys and moist wreckers know about it

crawl under the car and undo the shifter->trans rod where it bolts onto 2: the bottom of the shifter
 pull the console out
undo the 4 bolts holding the shifter/bracket and lift the shifter out
undo the nut inside the bucket that the top half of the shifter sits in, remove the shifter handle fron the lower half and then pull the lower half (the part that sticks out from under the trans tunnel and has the shifter->trans rod bolted to it)
clean the grease, dirt, crap, etc out of it all and put 1 nylon bush onto the cross shaft (a little rubber grease is usefull here, or another grease that doesnt attack plastic) of the lower arm, and then put the lower arm into the hole in the shifter cup/bracket where it was previously
slide the 2nd bush onto the cross-shaft of the lower arm from the inside of the bracket
put the upper part of the shifter onto the cross-shaft, and replace the nut
reinstall everything the same way it was removed, and dont forget to check your shifter the detents match up to the gears (not good putting it in P and getting reverse! lol)
