As the topic says the fuel gauge in the car is not working. Its a 85 XF. I have pulled the connection apart and cleaned the terminals in the top of the fuel tank, this worked last time it stopped working. But it hasn't worked this time. Is there anything else I can check or is a new part needed.

The guages have never been good or reliable in the XF's, or should I say the sender unit in the tank, replace the sender and see how it goes, but the XF's usually have a habit of showing a full tank even when its empty, I always drove my XF off thr trip meter.

yeah the xf's fuel gauge is pretty hopeless, it can only be the sender, wiring or the gauge itself, not much to it.

This may be true on early XFs but having owned 5 88 XF's I have never had a problem with fuel gauges or senders,.... come to think of it my mates 86 XF S Pack with EFI hasn't had any probs either. Maybe it is due to ethanol or other additives?
