Hey guys,

A new q... Between 1500-2000rpm there is a whirring noise I guess you would call it coming from the back end of the Fairlane... The rear axle oil is ok as it has been changed... I got a feeling it might be either the uni joints or yoke? What do you think? Where would I get a yoke from these days?

How many kms? I'd be inclined to to think the diff getting worn.

some fairlanes came out with a LSD, some didn't, do you know if yours is a LSD?? if so, you have a to use special LSD oil in it, if not, what oil did you put in it?

nosise and a chatter sound from a LSD is normal ... do you know if your diff has any play?

jack the rear up, turn one wheel, if (in neutral of course) now, if the opposite wheel turns the other day, you don't have a LSD, if it spins the same way as the wheel your turning, you have a LSD ..

btw: its much easier to have one wheel on grass and the other on the concrete

Now while the car is in the air, see if there is any play between turning each wheels, i.e. you turn one wheel and it take a second for the other one to spin, and then go the other way, and see what happens,

any problems, let me know :)

Laticia.

Cool!! The car has done 206k.. I haven't changed the oil yet.. I will try that test you describe above Laticia because I have no idea if it has LSD... I realise there is a special oil for it too... 80W-140 or something... I'm servicing the car on saturday and replacing a few things so I will try what u have mentioned and get back to ya!! Many thanks mate...

By spinning each rear wheel in the forward direction seperately, the other does not move. If I spin one of the rear wheels backwards, the other spins in the opposite direction?

The above is in Neutrel...

If I spin either rear wheel when in Drive, the other spins in the opposite direction!?

yea i think they stopd puttin dipstiks in the gearboxs in ef around late 94.
There is a piller plug on the side of the box but its a bit of a stuff around to put fluid in. the way i done it was a length of garden hose with a funnel on top. i was under my car holdin it in the hold and a friend poured fluid in the funnel.
Alternitavely u could get a gearbox service from somwer local.

Guys. I've had the Lane checked out and it's not the trans, thank youuuuuuu LOL
It's it the diff unfortunately... the rear wheel bearings are getting there too and the seals are just holding the oil in.. a minor leak each side but not good.. so i have got a few quotes from some Differential repairers...

First quote is based on an exchange basis of the diff for $1200 plus $285 per side to do the bearings

Second quote is overhaul on the diff and bearings/seals included for $825

Third quote is overhaul the diff which is a full set of bearings and seals including the axle bearings is $770 drive in drive out...

What u think???? :o
