I have an EL with a blend door error, I want to change it over with a second hand unit as I have a few of them in cars I'm wrecking. My question is: Can I test the units without fitting it, putting it all back together and doing a diagnostic on the system?

You can take the lower plate off and check the gear train.
The plug has 5 pins - 2 for the motor, apply 12v and reverse to run at full travel each way.
The 3 others are for the variable resistor, one pin will read resistance to one pin, and zero to the other at full travel, and vice versa at the other full travel.

You can pull the CC unit, and test the installed unit the same way without pulling the dash.

Dunno - never had a BDM fail.
I do get E2 errors, but they're mainly due to poor connections, which are easily fixed.

Check the resistance range from full open to full closed.

having just changed the BDM in my DL, here's some fresh info.

the motor, has 5 wires (as said), 2 green, 3 blue. the two green are the motor control. as said putting 12V and GND to them will rotate it one way, reverse the wires and it'll rotate the other way.

the one I pulled out, failed the diagnostics, and once I pulled it out, failed to move with power applied. As I do, I like to pull things apart, so I did. Couldn't find any thing wrong, put it back together, and the bastard started working again.

Yeah, TBH, they should be pretty bulletproof - they don't have to move heavy loads.
Usually an error will occur if the motor doesn't run, or gets obstructed, or the CC unit can't measure the resistance range to calbrate the blend door travel.

Check out the tech docos for wiring ID.

It is a relatively common problem though.

And a right royal PITA to rectify.
