My 5.0L windsor has a strange idle all of a sudden, it sounds lumpy but has a standard cam, When driving its pretty bad, shakes the whole car and I dont want to push it incase something bad happens.

The car has had a cooling problem for a couple of days where it would get really hot and the only way to cool it would be to turn the engine off. Ive just done a full coolant flush and put new stuff in it and still it seemed to have a blockage somewhere as the coolant stayed in the tank and wouldnt run through. After a little while the coolant started to move and had to put another bottle in but the shuddering is still there.

Ive been told by a few its the harmonic balancer and others its done a head. The whole car shakes a bit as well during idle and driving

Any help would be great on this subject as its my daily. Please help me.

Ask any questions and ill try and help want to get the correct answers before going and ordering parts.

Is the shaking/vibration under load or straight idling?
I had the shaking issue when my balancer had crapped it self.
In regards to the coolant issue, your radiator could be blocked.

Failing harmonic balancers are a common issue on the 5.0's.

Good point cjh, a dead lead or plug will also give vibration, shaking.

Just a random idea, did you flush your radiator out, spiritedly?
Hows it cooling now?

When I flushed it, I did it twice just to make sure all the old stuff was out. After filling up with new coolant and running the car the temp rose all the way to L so I played with the thermos as I noticed they werent turning on either.

After the fan came on it cooled down alot and stayed down but the rad tank was still half full. Took it for a drive down the road and back and thats when I noticed the shuddering was still there.

And now its been sitting for about a week untouched

If you do intend to check the balancer, you will have to dismantle the radiator and thermo's to get access to the balancer, take the fan belt off then pull the balancer towards the front of the car and see if it has any play or if it slides forward, if it slides forward then you need to replace it ASAP.
but check the leads and plugs before checking the balancer.

Ill change all plugs and leads first up as its something I want to change anyways. If that doesnt fix the problem then Ill check the balancer
