Howdy all,
Ive recently bought another E Series Falcon, this time an EF XR8.

Ran into an issue where I need to bump the steering wheel to start the car.
Ill hold the key in the run position, then bump the wheel and it'll fire every time.

Im thinking BEM or Ignition Switch? Does this sound right? Not sure how to really isolate the issue.

Thanks guys

Yep... Big problem on E series... One of the relays in the smartlock section of the BEM wasn't right for the number of operations it was meant to do... I have pulled the smartlock module to bits in the past and found the relay and replaced it... You can get another one and program it to the barrel and you'll be right...

Its not so much bumping the wheel... Bump the dash just above your left knee (where the handbrake would be on an old car)... That's where the BEM is and the jolt makes the relay make and pull the starter in...

Cheers,
Tim

Remember which relay it was....? Lol

And to reprogram, I just leave the key in the barrel in the ON position for an hour or so, right?
Locks cycle etc?

yeah... way I could tell was the jewel keep flashing and once it went out or went solid it was paired...

Pull the circuit board out of the BEM... Find the two red wires with blue trace (or maybe blue wires with red trace) and follow through the plug and then onto the tracks on the circuit board to the relay they go into... That is the dodgy relay... On the ED it was a dual relay (two completely separate relays in one box)... The second half of the relay seemed to do little so I unsoldered the relay and turned it round 180 degrees and soldered it back in and never had a drama again... At least until it wears out in 20 years time too...

Could remove the relay and put in a std relay base pig tail and then mount a std ford relay on the outside of the module for easy replacement later or anything...

Cheers,
Tim

Looks like I've got some work cut out for me.
I'll give it a crack and see how I go.

I'll see if the jewel goes solid too.

Thanks mate.
