I just bought a 1999 Fairmont with smart shield and it only has 1 ignition key how do I go about getting an new one cut / programmed for car.
Do I have to take it to a Ford dealer if so what is the cost involved?

I talked to Rex Gorell Ford in Geelong today they said it would be around $200 but the guy said it would be much cheaper to buy key from locksmith then take it to dealer and pay $42 to have it programmed.

I now need to get quotes from lock smith

I to had this problem with my 2002 AU3 Falcon Forte. I rang around and found a Locksmith here in Brisbane that did it for me for $120 (cut a key and programmed it). Call Northside Locksmiths on 33502077 (I spoke to Andy) or go to www.northsidelocksmiths.com. Not all locksmiths seemed to be able to do this however so just keep ringing as this is way cheaper than the Ford dealers I contacted for quotes (all around the $200 mark).

I had the same problem and spent 3 days researching it. I know with the BA's you can program it yourself, but am unsure about an EF/EL.

EDIT: The process takes roughly 45 seconds as well. Ford are rip off merchants.

Smartlock models dont need programming its only the Smartshield keys as the have a chip in the actual key

Since theres already a thread for this, I wanted to mod an mk6 with only 1 key. Same reason I dont want to go to the local Ford dealer and pay their rip off prices. Ive tried calling Northsidelocksmiths but they're like an hour away from me. I tried to call another locksmith here in Chermside West, they are offering me a kit and that I can just buy a new key and they told me I can program it myself. What do you guys think? Since this is my only key, I dont want to lose it and have all the trouble that goes with losing it. Thanks
