I've recently acquired a '96 XH XR6 with a rough body but good engine and running gear, I was originally only going to flog it off as I picked it up for $800 but after driving it for a week I decided I liked it too much to get rid of so I started researching how to do it up.

This leads me to my current query. I've read the tech docs and searched all of the post about fitting cruise into an XH and from everything I've read if it has ABS then it should be a plug and play job. I finally had a look the other day though and it looks like it 'had' ABS but when the former owner wrecked the original bar it looks like he's either smashed the ABS unit up and removed it or it was never fitted and taped up, it still has an ABS fuse but the plug in front of pos 1 is empty. I also had a look around near the brake rack and I cannot find the plug for the cruise actuator so I'm after some info.

From what I've read XR6s should have come with ABS as standard which means it should have cruise plugs, is there anywhere they could be hiding? And if it doesn't have cruise wiring how big a job is it to strip the loom out of a donor car, I've got access to any amount of EF and EL bodies so that's not a problem.

Hey mate,

You have probably found the answer by now, but just in case. XH's didnt get ABS. Yes sedans had ABS but the utes never got them till the AU ute was released.

Cheers,

Brendon

^^^ Not True. ABS was optional throughout the XHI & II range - excepting Outback utes IIRC. XHII's had an ABS sticker on the lower rear screen.
You'll find your loom has bits and pieces - modulator plug is there, LH front sensor loom, rear sensor looms are in the tray, finish behind the glovebox. the LSD will have the pulse rings.
Search for the threads concerning ABS to non ABS EF/EL - use username 'Happy'.

Cruise isn't dependent on ABS in these - you should have a plug under the shelf near the brake booster.

Ok no worries. Just going from what Ive wrecked and seen over here, havent seen one yet that has ABS, let alone a sticker fitted. None of mine do, or did.

Cheers

Hi guys I know this is an old thread but regarding the XH rear-is the boss (fitting) there to actually fit the abs sensors?

P.s Bosch 2U ABS system was an optional extra in series 1 XH
Series 2 XH used the Bosch 5.3 ABS sysem still optional only.

Should be - mine had an LSD fitted, so axle pulse rings were there, sensor mounting points were there as well. Front uprights different story, front sensor points were just a solid casting ear - no holes, threaded sections, etc.
I ended up fitting a Bosch 5.3 setup from an EL Fairmont.

Thanks Snap, its a XH XR8 lsd just haven't had a closer look yet,do you know if I could use one of the rear abs sensors as a speed sensor for the later B-series ecu?

The AU & BA tone wheels/pulse rings have an extra dimple, so I'd say that would throw the speed out - the ABS sensor coils are a different resistance as well. You could possibly use AU/BA axles, along with AU/BA sensors. Since AU's and BA's did use BW 78 diffs (different wheel track though), possibly the axles may need shaving off a bit of the length to suit. The sensors are a different type, so I don't know if they are a direct fit either.
Another option may be to flash the ECU to get it's speed off the gearbox speed sensor - a la BA utes without ABS. These are only suggestions, I've not tried any of this.
