basically u havea vacum leak! at teh back of the swicth there is a whole heap of vacum lines to send vacum to the right door motors etc to open/close them to direct teh airflow
one of these hoses has come loose/off hence why u only have air coming out in 1 spot regardless of the vent position swicth
not sure exaclty how to get at in your XH ute i am sure someone else on this site can help you in that regards

ps you car does not have a bad idle by chance?

Okay, under the bonnet near the A/C pipes there should be two vacum hoses, one green, one black, the black one goes into the rear of the intake manifold next to the brake booster hose. That one falls out, (well has done a few times on my ED before)

when thats happened, it only blows air at the window... so yeah, have a look and see if thats come unpluged.

I had this problem earlier in the year, and I couldn't find the leak and the Idle wasn't too bad, leak was eventually found at the heater tap.

A poor idle will have no 'effect' on your heater controls but it is a symptom of a vacuum leak, as the heater controls are 'powered' by vacuum, a leak anywhere in the system will leave you with not enough vacuum to change the controls.
