This is my first post since the board was "reinvented" so go easy. Was a regular poster before then, mostly on electrical issues (cos thats my game).

In my V8 EF Fairmont I can smell fuel in the cabin pretty bad. Worse on hot days. OK when driving along but going below about 50kmh it starts.

I don't seem to be going through extra juice and cannot find any tell tales of a leak. I have had new headers and cats fitted but this was happening before then.

I have considered the tank may be venting into the boot somehow, any ideas ?????

Check fuel filter underneath car. Follow fuel rail from fuel filter to engine and check full length.

I am guessing the EF will be similar to the ED... have you checked the cap for the tank inside the boot??

When I had my tank cleaned out, the mechanic didnt put the little cap thing back in its spot, and the car reeked of fuel. I pulled up the carpet - found it, and put it back, and the smell stopped.

If I remember right there was a service bulletin that came out for that fault, it could be just that problem (it might not be either), it was the carbon canister vent pipe, man that was too long ago to remember the exact fix, I can only remember having to fit new hoses and plastic pipe up the chassis rail to stop the smell coming into the cab.


Anyone working in a Ford dealership should be able to find the bulletin pretty easy.

XR8Chic, I have checked under the carpet in the boot and the only rubber not in place is in the spare wheel well and this opens the bottom to outside, not the fuel tank.

IIRC the smell started about the same time I got four new tyres and got DBA gold rotors up front. I wonder if there was a pipe knocked off the charcoal canister when the rotors were being fitted.

Also since the headers were fitted the it misses occasionally at idle, might be a completely different problem (or just the nature of the headers).

Yep, carbon canister is usually the culprit - worst in the heat due to the properties on fuel at such temperatures.

As stated - carbon cannister. You'll notice it on hot days as it can become saturated quite quickly when the fuel in the tank is reasonably warm and vapourising quickly.

The service fix was to extend the venting pipe on the cannister.

If you wanna have a play around with it, it lives in the passenger-side guard, near the ABS unit.

Wasn't there also a problem with the carbon canister purge valve being installed the wrong way around from factory? :P
