hey im currently sprayin my car and ive been told that the shine is all in the clear coat...just wanna make sure, another thing is that some have told me to sand between coats, but a guy i know sprayed his car and did not sand between coats as it looks better from the gun. wat u rekon?

Yes the shine comes from the clear. Don't worry too much about sanding between coats, but B4 you spray the clear, get some realy old 1200 wet/dry & a bucket of water with dish'liquid in it and give it a light sand. After you applied the clear, a light polish.

yeh the shine is all in the clear.. i recently painted a VL for a mate... i didnt use acrylic or 2pac i used this polyester paint spose to be the new thing... turned out really good.. i put a light coat of colour on then lightly sanded that then another coat of colour then lightly sanded then clear lightly sand and another coat of clear lightly sand with even finer than 2000 if u can get it and then buffed with special 3M car polish and it came up really! shinny.... its amazing how much the colour changes after u put on the clear.. also be careful not to put to much clear on.. we were experimenting with clear and we put like 6 or 7 coats of clear on the bonnet and man did it look fukn nice really deep looking but it didnt take long and the paint like shattered almost.. was really weird!

so you dont recomend putting too many clear coats on? does the clear get crows feet quickly or crack after short periods of time?

yeh it takes a while to happen but eventually the whole bonnet looked s**t house... almost like i shatterd window..

never heard off rubbing between coats, but with the 2 pac we use we let it flash off between base coats, and do the same with clear. but we use glasurit which may be different.

It depends on how the finish off the gun is, if you are using acrylic and you 'dry spray a patch, it'll be like sand paper and you will have to sand between coats, not good! It's always better to have an off the gun finish. Just remember that alot of clear isn't always the best, you can bury paint effect with too much and also change the colour of some.

ok today, we got the rest of the colour done, and got to around about 1 and a bit coats of clear. The car has Shine but not wat i expected, how many coats should i do befor doing too many? and about what coat will i really start to see some shine..Also after the clear is finished do i buff the paint?

Just a couple of coats should be fine. Give the paint a week off, then polish it. Use the stuff that is designed for the first ever polish on an acrylic finish. Go to the paint shop and ask them what polish you need to use first time and they will give it to you.

I have to agree with you on that one brett351, don't be to harsh when you polish it either, polish compounds have a slight cutting agent, thats how they work, they cut out your light scratches to give shine. You'll have to post some photo's of the car!

i will take some photos tommorow of it. I was just expecting it to have massive shine, but it didnt. But i will do a couple more layers and buy some polish and hopefully have it ready this week. but i will post some pics maybe tommorow some time.
