A mate has a AU ute. He has just had a lukey exhaust fitted and XR snorkel and K&N filter. Car sounds awesome, and low end torque has really picked up. But he is now wanting to pick up a bit more high end power particularly for overtaking. car is manual. Any sugestions?

When you pick up bottom end, you loss some from the top, boils down to you cant have your cake and eat it too.

this might sound really basic, but have u tried running premium fuel in it compared to regular unleaded... also worth trying different premiums as for some weird reason different people have best results with different fuels...

k well he told me today that he hasn't got the xr snorkel in yet so thats constricting the airflow at high revs, and then he said he doesnt' shift outta overdrive. So i think the problem is mostly behind the wheel...
his eyes bulged a bit when i said i give mine 3rd at 100kph to overtake..
but ya just gotta get in the power range..

lol yes it does sound as tho the problem is with the driver... overtaking in 5th might even be bad for it if it labours it too much

i know. i've been told my a few mechanics not even to tow in 5th. for fear of labouring the engine and doing damage.
It makes me worry cause this mate is in his late 40s but when he was my age used to do some rally driving. Gone from a fast driver who could handle any situation to someone who can't be bothered to change down gear to overtake someone in 20 years. I hope i don't turn into this.

Some of the bigger problems with towing in fifth gear is that with increased load comes increased heat, but due to the fact that the car is doing less rpm, the water and oil and getting transferred slower. Also, the lay shaft is smaller than the main shafts, and gets a bigger load placed on it when in fifth, rather than fourth. When overtaking, select your gear before you make your move, complete the overtaking in that selected gear, and then once pulled back in change back to fifth. Changing gears while overtaking just loses you more speed. After driving a diesel patrol, you soon learn the quickest ways to get it moving :D

Mate get a chip!!! The biggest thing you can do is a chip and a good torquey cam.

I have the lukely exhaust and JMM race headers..and indeed it gave the best improvement.more over the cam. Ithink that your mate would be stocked with a reputable chip.

O ..also a nice diff ratio change will be good too.

Yeah i think he is going to chip it soon. He also keeps going on about the stock headers being good enough and extractors not making much difference. is this BS???

In my oppinion and experience extractors dont give the $400-700 performance gain that you would get out of a wade regrind cam. This is why insurance companies will still easily insure you with extractors but not with a cam. In racing applications header design makes a big difference but few of us have race cars or race engines so the gains are marginal.

Was talking to him again yesterday, and i mentioned what was said about dropping a gear. He says it dosen't make any difference, and the car struggles to make it to 160km/hr. So their is definately something wrong with it.
He recently had the air flow meter replaced, i'm thinking Ford may have put the wrong one in or something so the mixtures are way off. But thats just me ranting..
Any thoughts?
