Oh what fun we had on the dyno today. My mate tells me his new work has a dyno, and that for 50 bucks at lunch time he can get me a few runs to see how its going.

sweet I say, sounds beaut. Im in. race over there at lunch, and get her put on the dyno.

Why isnt it strapped down, i asked dutifully.

"we never had the need to strap them down" came the reply.

Have you ever had them jump off and speed out your driveway I asked.

"Yes a hilux last week..."

Confidence waning...

So they start run 1, after not punching in data or anything other than setting dyno resistance to 12..(???)

odd results. a peak of 181 nm!!

and 225 rwkw.

wtf??

we try again. same results. I querry wether theyve done this before. the answer is no- at least not to measure power (slaps forehead). On the brightside my emisions is spot on perfect (aparently it is all they use that dyno for is AF ratios.)

Dismayed by the flubbed result, I seek to get some moneys worth. I aske to do a couple more runs, one without the airbox and induction pipe (bare throttle body) to see what gives.

result was a loss of 7nm and a gain of 15 kw. goes to prove that the pipe does give torque.

After thinking about this failed atempt, Im thinking that dyno must have been set up for major resistance if its reading 225 rwkw, and a paltry 181 nm. it would be reasonable if the kw was halved and the torque doubled, would be pretty close to what i would expect.

who here has knowledge of dyno operations, and what they did wrong to get these vastly anomolous numbers? They seriously had no idea how to work it. It was inbuilt into the floor of the garage and the computer unit had roadmaster on it.

to top it all off, their printer was stuffed ( the owner tells me its been stuffed for 12 moths, F**k me dead). all i have is my mates word to back me up that this happened. I know it sounds made up but its seriously all true.
feel free to have a chuckle at my 50 buck expense I want some value out of it.

for a stockish i6  F**k no. about half that with the little few mods ive got.

I was actually more dissapointed by the printer not working than the dyno not working, you guys woulda been in fits of laughter, 181 nm indeed

the name of the joint was something like JBM automotive (keep getting it confused with jmm- its on dunlop avenue in hoppers crossing, about 10 mtrs after you turn into dunlop ave on the left, just off old geelong rd)

s-tranzor, i was not laughing whilst watching my car twitch around on the dyno. the load resitance was set so high the dyno was reading 120km hr at the top of 3rd. now i know for a fact that 3rd will take me to the 180 limiter at about 4900 rpm.

wasnt entirely a waste, the afs were good, and i know loosing pipe length lost torque.

gotta look on the brightside.

my testi's for that printout tho.
