Hey,
I drive a 1996 EFII Fairmont and i have noticed that when I go over a bump or a rough patch on the road (at 40km/h or over) a squeak is noticable. From my ears it sounds like it is coming from both sides at the rear. My car is stock except for 17" EL GT replica's and I do not believe that this squeak happened when i first bought the car 10 months ago. I have had a wheel allignment and have changed the brake pads but I don't believe they are the sorce of the problem. Also, when my car is stationary i can push down on any corner and the squeak WILL NOT happen, hopefully that will make finding the problem easier. Any ideas guys??? |

If it's a sharp chirp-type of squeak, it could be the rear caliper slides that need lubrication. I know, mine are doing the same thing.

+1 for mike, i have the same chirp especially over the cat eyes. Its only happened since the 17's went on. Lower profile tire = less absorbsion from bumps.....

Put some rubber grease on the sway bar "D" bushes, or replace them if they are worn.

Alright,
Today i have been busy trying to fix this squeak. I completely took the sway bar off, still no difference so definetly not that  Then i tried lubricating the caliper slides. Are these the slides where the pads are? Or the pins that the caliper floats on? I lubricated the pins that the caliper floats on, and still no difference  So if it was the sldies for the pads i will have to try that. |

I havnt bothered fixing mine but i would say its where the edges of the brake pad sit on the caliper opposite the springs.

OK, get some silicone spray and spray it on where the upper wishbone bushes are. Whilst doing this bounce the car after each application. Try that.

*** PROBLEM SOLVED ***
Issue: Unlike the front calipers, the rear calipers do not have metal shims that the brake pad can slide on and therefore the metal backing of the brake pads slides on the metal part of the caliper braket. Hence the squeak. Solution: Remove the wheel and then the caliper, leaving the caliper bracket on the car so that you are able to sit your brake pads on, hence, being able to see where the metal parts of the caliper bracket and brake caps rub. Then a small amount of grease needs to be applied to these areas. Becareful not to get any grease on your rotors or the pad part of your brake pads. A big thanks to everyone who have given me ideas and suggestions for my problem. |
