Interesting man. I've got a series 1 Eb climate control one spare in the shed, i should check it out, see if it's worth keeping or not.

Cheers

Righto, with my second day off, I'm sitting at home bored so I go to the local Autobarn to see what I can do on the cheap for my station wagon. I spotted some chrome signwriter's tape for $12 so I bought a roll and drove back home.

The plan was, I have colour coded my bump strips down each side of the car as I was going for a EB GT station wagon theme. I changed my mind with that and put stock front and rear bumpers on my car. At the time, I also bought some OEM chrome strip to sit in the bumpers.

Image

The door bump strips were left as they were until I thought of a replacement of some sort.

Image

Well I got to work. The tape itself is only 9mm wide and so I needed to do three runs across to fill what was the old chrome strip. The results looked promising:

This what I mean with the three runs across:

And the passenger side completed:

I still have some tape left over but not enough to complete the driver's side. It was a pretty easy mod and something that other EA-ED and NA-NC2 owners may want to look at when their chrome bump strips go bad and bubbly. I have super glued the ends to stop peeling and lifting. I cannot say whether it is UV resistant and if longetivity will be an issue.

Looks good right now.

Will just have to wait and see how it goes in the weather etc.

I am going to try painting the strips with a bright silver and gloss clear and see how that turns out.

Cheers

most chrome tapes like that tend to stand up to the conditions pretty well.

You just need to cut/buff those side moulds.

I agree with that 100%, as long as the surface is completely free of any dirt and grease/wax it will stick on very well. I did the same on my EF, had them on for ages in all sorts of conditions and they looked mint. One day i decided to remove them for a different look and as i peeled it off one of the side moulds, it peeled the clear coat off the paint with it, so it does bond quite well

Looking good there Barnacus, the chrome breaks up the red very nicely. You have one classy looking wagon mate

It is branded different but on the barcode sticker it has saas shop or similar. I found it on the Autobarn pinstripe display stand if that helps

I've used the SAAS stuff on my moulds as well - the EL Fairmont ones along the sides seem to stand up okay - the back around the bends seem to crack over time, maybe I stretched it too much, or not prepped enough.
I think your's sticking to the paint will probably last better.

Finished the drivers side of the chrome tape on the bump strips, except that I didn't buy enough of the stuff and now they have run out!!:

The car is up for rego in April so there are a few things that I need to fix before that time.

- Exhaust. I've been busy building up wife credits and a new PROPER system has been approved. I need a few more credits to get a couple new catalytic converters and have my eye on some magnaflow ones.

- Brakes. I bought and fitted new rotors and pads. It seems that the fronts have warped which gives me that old BA brake/steering wheel wobble feeling. Rotors need skimming.

- Automatic gearbox.[FIXED!!!] The car has been behaving strangely on light throttle. The gears have been going crazy, jumping up and down gears which I suspected of being the inhibitor/gear position switch. I did a diagnostic test on the TCM and sure enough my suspicions were confirmed. When I got up under the car, I saw that the heat shielding was not there and a wire to the gear position switch had shorted out on the LH cat. Fixed that up, cleared the fault codes on the TCM and a new diagnostic test reveals that the problem is fixed. Thank Ford for electronic diagnostic testing!!

- Tune up the LPG and a re-gas of the aircon.

People may remember the little project that I revealed in regards to my car PC. I'm going to be using my old Dell Inspiron notebook . This little project is MK1 and I hope to lay the platform knowledge wise on a more powerful and integrated setup. MK1 will be laptop, existing AM/FM tuner and existing speakers with a 7" or 8" touchscreen LCD VGA monitor mounted into the dash. Of course, I have to get past rego and then I'll start doing some work on this.

Alloy heads, rockers etc have also been put off until after rego. I have to spend money on my house. Priorities, priorities & home ownership.....

It's coming along nicely Banarcus, looks much better with the chrome striping 8-)

Have you got a Repco near you? You mentioned that you got the striping from Autobarn, but Repco does sell the Saas chrome pinstripe tape that Snap was talking about earlier - they come in 9mm as that is what i used on my EF (i think they go up to 12mm thickness) so you may be able to get some from there instead of waiting around for them to become available again at Autobarn, just a thought

I used a razor blade to take off the clear plastic skin stuff before I painted them. Four years later, I have then added the chrome tape and so far so good. Sticks very well.
