Well to take the sump off you need to drop the K-Frame and if you do it with the engine in don't you run the risk of getting metal shavings in your oil? (please correct me if i am wrong.)

Yes u could get shavings in the sump , which is why im going to take the sump off when I turbo mine

i used a metal punch from bunnings $10 i used a small punch to make a hole then used the bigger one which i welded to a tube removed the front right wheel and you can see where the pole can slide in for the perfect spot. once i done this i braised the fitting in place then covered it in quick steel just to be sure :P

So u had the sump on I'm assuming ?

Is this a big deal anyway?
My thinking is if you were to crank it over a few times then drop and replace the oil, any small stuff you miss will end up in the filter anyway and the larger ones won't get through the stainer and would come out in the next change.

I forgot all about the oil filter, I suppose u could be right , as long as there are no tiny filings

I've seen a sump return fitting on Ebay that looks interesting, you would need to have the sump off because it's designed to fit thru a hole in the side of the sump, and has a washer & nut to do it up & hold it in place. Easier than welding in a fitting. I'm thinking I might take this path with the mighty boy.

If you have to take the sump off anyway why not do it properly and weld something in?

Is the sump wall even thick enough to drill and Tap a thread ?

there has been alot of talk about drilling the sump while in the car.. and to be honest would you want to risk your multi thousand dollar turbo kit you just installed being damaged because you didnt want to remove the motor or drop the k-frame? (which most will remove the motor to freshen up the motor anyways)

when my new motor goes in ill be drilling the sump and fitting a threaded bolt in that has a speedflow style fitting on the end like dan did on his ute so that i can just attach the pipe or if turbo kit is removed you simply screw on a speedflow cap and no oil leaks, and by fitting a screw in fitting with a nut on the inside you can fit washers to the outside to give a perfect seal.. much easier then getting under there and doing up a clamp with a screwdriver..

But for someone who wasn't going to remove there motor, would punching a hole and brazing a fitting on be safe? Like what u did

ahh ok my mistake dan,

yes punching a hole is far safer then drilling. i was doing to drill then drop the sump a few mm and pump some fresh oil down the side of the sump to pump it out but you just dont know how much is actually in there.. and its not just oil pickup, you also have to worry about rings

The filter isn't going to stop everything, a little shaving could get thru, also with brasing the fitting on. How much heat can the sump take ? Did u use oxy ? I'm guessing a mig welding would heat the walls up too much?

i bought a braising kit from bunnings, but took forever to heat it up. its a metal sump on e-series so should take a fair bit...
