Bummer dude, on a day like today as well!

Local guy pressure tested and installed R134a with dye for $120.00 inc. It handled the 35C we had today pretty well, first time the ole colimate control could actually do its assigned job :)

Well, the wiring and diagnostic guru (snap) came around today for a chat and bug hunt. The antenna issue has finally been resolved.

First up it was found that the spare antenna he brought with him would not activate when plugged in, even though there was voltage at the plug. It was also found out that the original antenna that HAD been working, was no longer working. We again tested the wiring from the BBM plug to the antenna plug and snap's spare antenna worked as it should. Now, he happened to have a spare green BEM with him so we threw that in and guess what.... the antenna worked as it should. So, the second BEM I put in to fix this problem was showing the same problem as the original - no antenna action.

With this third one in all was well so snap turned his attention to the original antenna that came from the car. This was a saga in itself as it was ascertained that it wasn't original. A quick rewire and it worked so that was then plugged in and all was happy in the world, well at least Rach's EF Fairmont world that is.

I just have to put the dash back together (again!) and it will be all good. Time to move onto the next problem.... :)

Cheers
RD

Howdy all

Got a couple of issues with Rach's beast that I need to resolve quick smart. She is complaining big time and wants a smaller car but I want to get this one working 100% instead.

The issues at hand are:

1. It will dump all the water out of the overflow after turning it off. I have bled the system and no air bubbles surface. I did this with the cap off and engine running at about 1500rpm for 30 minutes. Previous to this it was actually using water, or seemed to be. I suspected a blown head gasket but had no telltale signs in the oil or filler cap but only noticed the dumping of water at Aldi's yesterday.

Q: Is this a blockage somewhere in the system? Radiator maybe? Driving me nuts....

2. It has been dumping oil all over the driveway like a ruptured oil tanker. I thought it might be the front seal or the sump gasket but after cleaning nothing was coming from those areas. Today while I was looking into the water issue I noticed that oil was pumping, yes pumping, out from the top of the water pump.

Q: Before I go ordering new parts can anyone tell me where exactly this might be coming from? Would I need to get another water pump to cure it?

I really feel like just pulling this engine and replacing it, anyone got a spare EF engine they want to sell cheap? :)

Cheers
RD

RD the oil leeak is more likely from the timing chain tensioner than the water pump. Im not sure how big a job it is though to fix.

Thanks Foggy

Ben dropped over yesterday and gave me some possible fixes for the problems and he suggested timing chain tensioner too. Once I have the rug rats to school, I'll start work....

Cheers

Okies dokie, looks like it is sorted....

Water:

I replaced the rad cap (at Ben's suggestion) with one I had lying around and the flow of water after turn off stopped. Will go grab a brand newie soon.

Oil:
Bingo by both Ben and foggie - the time chain tensioner was loose! Went to back it off just a bit to whack some silicon around it and found I could turn it with my fingers!!!!!!!!! Nipped it up along with a dose of high temp silicon and all looks rosey at this point. Will double check after picking up the kids.

Now I am on to the other little niggly things with this car.....

Cheers
RD

Oh, hey Ben...

I found that elusive rattle in the back! It was the bloody shock after all. It felt rock solid when trying to make it move but I got a heap more out of it with the rachet. The upper mount was a little loose too so that got the treatment too.

Good news on the oil gush too, not a speck lost after tightening the tensioner bolt.

More little things to do and then I will take my mind back to paint.....

Bruce, One quick thing you can test with the cooling system - slowly loosen the cap when the engine is cold (before first start of the day), should have no residual pressure, if there is, they'll most likely be a headgasket leak from a water port under a firing ring into a cylinder - this means water use, but no emulsion in the oil.
