Have you got the correct dip stick.....they had an orange rubber seal on the stick.
Is the airflow meter working properly???
Is the coolant temp sensor OK????

Also check the rocker cover gasket and the EGR valve for leaks.
ANY vacuum leak on the XF EFI system will make it run really really rich.

They use an ISC on the rocker cover - sounds like it has issues.

Throttle Position Sensor perhaps?- would explain the black smoke

Had a similar problem with my zl efi coupla years back and knowing nothin about efi i asked a mate who said it was the fuel regulator which is on the firewall end of the fuel rail i bought a 2nd hand one (cheap as) fitted it up and sweeet problem solved! :D - apart from a cracked fuel rail, big hands no room no patience  but give it a go mine just went no warning
