Hey Guys,
I have 2 cars that do the exact same thing. EF Fairmont and a EF Futura. The EF Futura is running a EL Open Wheeler diff and the EF Fairmont is running the stock LSD. Both cars under load of when you have the foot on the throttle drive fine, its just when coasting that you hear the knocking noise at the left rear of the car. I heard about the additive but it seems to be for LSD only. I'm pretty certain the EL diff isn't LSD. I however went to ford and was given an additive for the BA falcon LSD IRS :S It costs $65 and the guy said he never heard of the magical $10 oil everyone here was talking about. Would this work for the non LSD diff? what is the part number? I also read it could be the outer wheel bearing. Is this possible. Please help  Its driving me nuts. Also, What diff oil should i be using for both diffs. Thank you. |

Have you checked diff for play? Normally the clunk sound you described is caused from play, does it clunk when you let go of throttle or at low speeds around corners?. No oil additive will fix this problem the additive is to quieten the whirring noise.
But a clunk on one side of the rear end when doing hard take offs could be worn lower trail arm bushes or even loose shock absorber mount bolt. Jack rear end up and have a real good look, have it in neutral and turn wheel in a jerking motion if you hear clunk then you know your diff has had it |

Also, What diff oil should i be using for both diffs. Thank you. I have the exact same problem on my EB2 and would love to know if it's just a bush and something simple or if the diff is rooted. Has done it for about 40,000km now and I have changed the fluid to no avail. Have learnt to ignore it. As you say, mine will be fine when there is load on the diff, however when you let go of the throttle and just let it coast, i get a knocking sound coming from the rear right of the car. If I reach around and put my hand on the rear right passenger footwell I can feel a slight knocking sensation through the floor.

My futura had the same problem an the diff is routed. Check the back lash on your tail shaft

I'd also check that the lower shock mounts are done up to correct tension - aka f**k tight and then add half a turn.

I've just noticed this as well on my ef open diff. It's a knock noise that's relative to speed and again only noticeable when coasting not under load or hard braking.
I've checked wheel bearings which seem fine then coated the uni joint in inox spray with no effect at all. Is it a good chance the diff is on the way out and what exactly causes the noise?

I unbolted the tailshaft tonight and the diff has a fairly obvious issue with the gears, heaps of play and kind of grinds when you spin the yolk side to side.
Next question is how much longer will it last like this? I noticed it got louder with a slightly heavier knock on the way home after driving on the freeway for a bit but it seems to have now maintained that noise/ sound to a point where it's not getting any worse?

Stuff like that is a bit hard to diagnose just by jacking up and spinning the wheels - the diff spiders add s**t of play.
Suspension/uni's can be checked with a pinchbar or similar - the uni's are generally good with these models. You need to load up the outer rear wheel each side and check for noise increase - a large empty carpark or whatever doing circles will help. Normal driving is hard to differentiate between them and the diff centre noise. After a run, drain a little bit of diff oil, spread it on a bit of plastic and shine a torch - sparklies mean obviously it's lunch time. I've had a couple of diffs do pinion bearings in recent times - a nice whirr on accelerate to about 60kmh, and slowing down below that as well, nice sparklies in the oil - second one had a slight knock on takeoff. IIRC with both I was driving about 4-5mths in that condition, but if you are getting metal in oil, best to get a replacement ready.
