hey all, im just wondering if anybody knows of anywhere that i can get a high powered inverter that i can plug into my house and run my car sound and equipment off during parties to stop my battery dying. the only thing iv been able to find have been little power ones that run s**t all amperage. any help greatly appreciated. thanks.

What about just hooking up a decent battery charger to it whist using the stereo, you could get a pretty good C-tec charger for less than the power supply, some have a seperate "supply feed" as well as the charge leads.

the only thing iv found with those tho is that they dont put out anywhere near enough power to be able to keep the charge up to the battery. (im running 2 amps)

You can use a battery charger but it needs to supply 20amps Plus of current.
Most i have seen cant keep up with the demand a car stereo does. For EG: Mine at a good volume nothing loud does about 35amps, I do have 3 amps in the car. I am not sure what the Ctek charger does nor do i know the price of them. Wazza |

the inverter that was recommended is 40 amp for the same price. wouldnt that be the better option?

For that money i would get the one from Jaycar one for which does 40amps.

personally I think that 40Amp one has features your paying for which will be wasted...
all you want is this: http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.as ... rm=KEYWORD half the price... same output current... fixed voltage... that other one is so dear because you can specify voltage from 3 to 15 volts... with this is fixed to alternator std output (12V battery + 10% for charging) so you amps will think the alternator is running... this way nobody can screw with it on you and under or over power your amps and potentially damage them (especially if you'll be leaving it unattended at your parties)... my 2 cents worth anyway.. That would be ok too.
The other does have voltage adjustment but also does have a button on the bottom to fix the voltage at 13.8volts. When i have mine going i set mine at what most alternator do which is 14.4volts. Warren. |

Yeah thats ok too...
Sealed lead acid batteries recommend to be charged at 10% above rated voltage... Which works out at 13.2V So most power supplies are 13.8V (we have a 10 amp at work)... Alternators seem to hover anywhere from 14 to 15Volts depending how flat the battery is and how much load is being consumed by the rest of the car (more load mean more voltage drop and voltage must be lifted at the start of the cables to compensate)... Depending on the regulation % of both models the fixed one could easily however around the 14.5V mark... Keeping in mind the more load the better the regulation becomes... An unloaded supply always reads much higher than a load supply when it is regulating properly... Just for what he wants it for he'd be better saving the $200 as the voltage adjustment isn't really required... When I get one (I don't need 40amps) I'll get something with voltage reg because I use them for benchtop testing of all sorts of things... Cheers, Tim

thanks for the input fellas. i think im gonna go with the fixed 13.8v Supply because i dont really need the variable voltage and it suits my budget alot better. thanks again.
