I have been thinking about improvements to my NF Fairlane I6 to improve its LPG economy. Currently it gets about 350kms to 55litres of LPG. Whilst this is not too bad, what simple things could I do to improve the economy using LPG but still allow it to run on petrol? The car is an aftermarket conversion. I know LPG has a much higher octane than petrol but I'm not going to
be able to take advantage of this without changing compression ratio, cam and ecu.

I know some suggest good quality leads, non resistance spark plugs and larger spark plug gap.
Would this make any difference? What effect would this have on petrol?

Keep in mind I'm happy with the acceleration and general performance of the car.

You could fit an after market ignition system (eg. MSD) and that would increase the burn efficiency of both fuels.
You could get yourself a J3 chip and setup a switching system for it to swap between ignition maps when you change fuels, that way you can advance the ignition to better suit the slower burning LPG without pinging on petrol.

You could try and locate a Factory Tickford LPG ECU. It has specific maps for the LPG etc.

Is it as simply as finding a tickford LPG ECU and plugging it in and thats it??? I remember reading something about adding an extra wire???

Yep, you need to add another wire to PIN 8, and supply it with 12v to run on Petrol maps and 0v to run on lpg maps.

I like the idea of the J3 dual map myself.. I could then have my modded Xr6 image on one switch..and an gas modified map on the other... that way you get the benefit of more aggressive settings than the the standard dual fuel Tickford ECU.

Actually, I have been in discussion with the J3 boys about getting a chip with the Dual Fuel setup on it, but having the XR ticky petrol maps along with the LPG maps.

ohhh baby,,, that is what we want..

I'll be very interested in one of them thingy's too..

I have a tickford ghia ECU at the moment and would be plugging the J3 into that. (kinda redundant I know, but it's what I've got)

Thanks for the replies. I like the J3 chip idea and the ability to switch between 2 different bin files. If I'm running the standard NF Fairlane bin on the eec5, is it easy to turn the j3 chip off or do you need to unplug it? I'd be happy with the standard setup for petrol (I'm not chasing more power) and a LPG bin on the J3 chip for the changeover.

Has anyone changed to a J3 chip with an LPG bin file? Also does that mean I would no longer need my gastec LPG computer on the front shock tower?

You still need the LPG computer to run the LPG system. The Factory ECU only supplies the spark maps to the engine when LPG is selected. All the Tickford LPG ECU does is use better spark maps suited for LPG when LPG is selected, instead of making do with the petrol spark maps.

the tickford lpg maps could give upto %10 better economy...ive seen mine improve by around 30km to the tank ...

btw to trigger the LPG maps you earth the pin NOT apply 12v to it....no wonder your ecu was "stuffed"

Im really liking this tickford LPG ECU idea

Questions

How can i identify if its a genuine tickford LPG ecu for EF/EL falcon???

Is it a simply job to connect the wire or should i just get a pro to do it???

the ecu catch code will tell u wether its one or not

they start with 4t or 6t like normal tickford xr ecus....there is a list of them on this site somewhere

but generally something like 4teg for an ef

wiring is simple one u know what to do....can guide u once u get one

LPG has more octane, but its energy density is less than that of petrol. So fuel economy cant be as good.
